Genesys, Anyone?
« on: February 04, 2018, 07:03:22 am »
I'm getting hooked pretty hard on FFG's new Genesys RPG…anyone else?

I've fallen so hard I started podcasting about it. Lex, is it ok that I pimp my own 'cast on your forum?

Well, I hope it is since you already did. ;)

That uses the same system as their Star Wars game, doesn't it?

Yep, it's the same narrative dice system as seen in their Star Wars line.

They have made a few changes to it, but most of the nuts and bolts are the same.

How do you feel it works with a fantasy game? I'm still not sold on it for Star Wars, myself. ;)

I played two sessions in a fantasy game, and it went really well! I'm releasing them on my podcast, so if you want to listen to them you can.

The magic system is different from how the Force works in SWRPG and it works much better, IMO. A strain cost and a flat difficulty skill check like any other roll, no need for those awkward Force dice.

Heck, if you want I can run a one- or two-shot for you and some friends so you can try it out.

One of my big complaints with the dice system in Star Wars is it is so SLOOOOOOOOWWWW. Also the "relentless granularity" lol. (A listener came up with that term, still love it!) Have they done anything to mitigate that?

Practice? From my one game, things were slow in the beginning while the players were getting used to the dice. But after a few rolls, they were flying through them!

I think the digital dice roller helps, too, since it automatically cancels out the symbols so you just see the result.

Unfortunately I just can't get behind their clunky dice mechanics. I have tried it many ties and wanted to love it, but it's just not for me. Which is a shame, as it's the "official" Star Wars rpg right now.

Guess I'll he over here in my corner with my Star Wars Saga Books remembering the days of old.

While you're doing that, I'll be in bed, cuddling my D6 WEG Star Wars books, remembering the really old days :p

I'm sorry you weren't able to get past the dice mechanics, but to each their own!

I give you a ton of credit. Most FFG Star Wars lovers instantly try to sell me on the system as soon as I voice my dislike. In some pretty aggressive ways. It is partly why I haven't gone back after my first few attempts at plating the game.  I am glad they love it but you won't hear me brow beating anyone to play the systems and games I love.

Ugh, I very much dislike those people. You voiced your opinion and I respect that. Fück them and their "My game is the bestest evar!!!" bullshît.

I hope you have fun playing your game of choice  ;D

I have to say that I think it's possible part of my lack of enthusiasm for the system is that I mainly played it online. I think it's likely this system is a lot more fun in person than online. Online play tends to drag a lot more, so the time the system adds to interpreting rolls seemed to really bog it down. That would be much less of an issue with in-person play, where it's much easier for everyone at the table to chime in on the results of a given roll.

For me, the jury is still out on this system. I still have ideas for a Star Wars campaign I'd like to run some time, but I want to run it in person.

You know, now that you say that Lex my few experiences have been online as well. Though I own the Force and Destiny Starter set, I haven't had a chance to try it at an actual table. Maybe my opinion of it would change in a face to face game.

Unfortunately, there aren't any groups in my area, and I don't know enough about the system to try and organize one.
